How locals actually spend a weekend
Hike the foothills, swim the Yuba
Empire Mine State Park has 14+ miles of mellow trails through Gold Rush ruins. The South Yuba River — Hwy 49 crossing, Edwards Crossing, Purdon — is hands-down the best swimming hole network in Northern California. For sunset, the ridge at Sugarloaf in Nevada City is unbeatable.
Family-friendly spots →02 · Live musicMore live music per capita than anywhere
Grass Valley punches way above its weight. The Center for the Arts brings in nationally-touring acts. Miners Foundry, Lola, The Stone House and a rotating cast of porches and patios cover everything from bluegrass to psych to honky-tonk most nights of the week.
Tonight's shows →03 · Eat & drinkBrewery row, farm-to-table, killer coffee
Three Forks, Ol' Republic and 1849 anchor the local beer scene. Diego's, South Pine, Tofanelli's and Fable cover the daytime. For dinner, Lola, Heartwood and the Willo (just up the hill) are perennial locals' picks. Coffee crowd: BackPorch, BriarPatch, Wild Eye.
Where to eat →04 · History & main streetWalk a real Gold Rush town
Downtown Grass Valley and downtown Nevada City are both intact Victorian-era main streets — not theme parks, the actual buildings. Hit the Holbrooke Hotel bar, the National Exchange, Empire Mine, and the North Star Mining Museum for a half-day history loop.
Open the map →05 · Markets & artFarmers markets, First Friday, makers
Saturday farmers market on North Church Street (May–Nov) is the social event of the week. First Friday Art Walk in Nevada City is small but charming. The Center for the Arts and Nevada County Arts Council keep galleries rotating year-round.
What's on this week →06 · Festivals & big weekendsPlan around the big ones
California WorldFest (July), Strawberry Music Festival (Memorial/Labor Day), Cornish Christmas (December Fridays), Victorian Christmas in Nevada City, and the Nevada County Fair (August) — one of the prettiest county fairs in the country, set in a pine forest.
