We built grassvalley.app out of love for these foothills and the people who call them home. It exists because we wanted a place for neighbors, artists, makers, parents, weirdos, and small business owners to find each other — without algorithms, without ads chasing rage, without out-of-town corporations harvesting our attention.
If you want nice things in this world, you have to treat them well. That goes for forests, towns, and online communities. The guidelines below are how we keep this place worth coming back to.
The short version
- Be kind. Disagree without being cruel.
- Be local. This site is for and about Nevada County.
- Be real. No bots, no scams, no impersonation.
- Be safe. Don't share things that hurt people.
- Be honest. If you own the business, say so.
What we love to see
- Local events, gigs, farmers markets, trail days, open mics.
- Honest recommendations for businesses, restaurants, makers, services.
- Photos of this place — light, landscape, faces, signs, food.
- Asking for help, offering help, sharing resources.
- Niche clubs and meetups: book clubs, hikes, jam sessions, repair cafés.
What gets removed
We'll remove content — and, when needed, accounts — for any of the following. This list is examples, not a complete list.
- Harassment, targeted insults, threats, doxxing.
- Hate speech or content attacking people for who they are.
- Sexual content involving minors. Zero tolerance. Reported to law enforcement.
- Non-consensual intimate imagery or stalking.
- Promoting or organizing illegal activity (drugs, weapons, violence, fraud).
- Spam, scams, phishing, MLM pitches, AI-generated junk.
- Impersonating another person, business, or our moderators.
- Misleading reviews — fake positive reviews of your own business or fake negative reviews of a competitor.
- Content that has nothing to do with Nevada County or its people.
Disagreements happen — handle them like a neighbor
You can absolutely disagree with someone's politics, their business, their take on a local issue. Argue the idea. Don't attack the person. If a conversation is going sideways, walk away — or report it and let a moderator take a look.
Reporting
Every post, comment, listing, and message has a report option. Use it. Moderators review reports and take action. False reports to silence someone you disagree with are themselves a violation.
How moderation works
We have a volunteer moderation team — locals who care about this place. They can remove content, restrict accounts, and access reported material in the course of their work. They are human and they make judgment calls. If you think a call was wrong, you can reach out through the contact page.
Consequences
Depending on what happened, we may: remove the content, send a warning, restrict your ability to post, temporarily suspend your account, or permanently ban you and your devices. For illegal activity we preserve and report to law enforcement.
We reserve the right to shut this down
This site is a gift to the community, not an obligation. If it becomes a place that harms people — through abuse, harassment, illegal activity, or sheer volume of garbage we can't keep up with — we reserve the right to suspend features, suspend accounts, or shut the whole thing down at any time, without notice. We don't want to do that. Help us not have to.
In-person safety
Meetups, clubs, and events on the site happen between real people in the real world. We don't vet, supervise, or insure any of it. Use your judgment: meet in public for the first time, tell a friend where you're going, listen to your gut. If someone you met through the site harms you, contact local law enforcement first, then report the account to us so we can take action.
Thank you
Seriously. Thank you for being here, for being patient with us, and for helping make this place what it is. Stay weird, Nevada County.
